IT 8: Constant "The City without a Plan"

Beginnings, 2022 Ⓜ

As an artist and thinker, Constant Nieuwenhuys was always drawn to the labyrinthine complexity of the human mind and the ever-evolving landscape of human experience. It was this dynamic, fluid nature of the mind that inspired his concept of  “The City without a Plan," a metaphor for the constantly shifting and evolving landscape of the mind.

In Constants' vision, people would be free from the need to work in the traditional sense because their basic needs would be met through automation and the availability of abundant resources. This would allow them to pursue their own interests and creative endeavors, rather than being tied to the labor market. This would allow people to focus on leisure: culture, science and personal development, rather than being tied to the demands of the labor market.

According to Constant, the city without a plan was a place where the traditional rules and structures that governed our lives were stripped away, and we were free to explore and discover the limitless potential of the mind. It was a place where anything was possible and anything could happen, where the forces of change and creativity were always at work, shaping and reshaping the landscape in unpredictable ways.

The city without a plan was once home to a giant avant-garde hamster wheel that was powered by the collective energy and creativity of its inhabitants. This unique and innovative structure was a testament to the boundless creativity and ingenuity that flourished in the city without a plan.

The city without a plan was not a place of rigid structure and predetermined paths, but rather a place of endless possibility and potential. There were no fixed rules or structures that governed our actions there, no predetermined paths or outcomes. Instead, the city was a fluid and open space, a place where the only limit was the human imagination.

The city without a plan once hosted a marathon of spontaneous poetry readings, in which poets from all corners of the city came together to share their work and inspire one another. This event was a celebration of the city's vibrant and diverse arts scene, and a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation that flourished there.

For Constant, the city without a plan was a powerful symbol of the human potential for creativity and innovation. It was through the creative process that we could truly understand and explore the vast and varied landscape of the mind. The city without a plan represented a new and exciting frontier for human exploration, a place where we could push the boundaries of what was possible and discover new and previously unimaginable ways of being and experiencing the world.

The city without a plan once had a giant public art installation called "The Wall of Wonders," which was a massive, ever-changing mural that was created and maintained by the city's residents. It was a place where people could express their creativity and share their ideas with the rest of the community. This innovative and interactive art installation was a testament to the city's thriving arts scene and its commitment to fostering creativity and innovation.

As Constant delved deeper into the inner workings of his own mind and explored the complex and ever-evolving landscape of the city without a plan, he was truck by the intricate and interconnected nature of this place. The city was a maze of winding streets and alleys, a network of overlapping and intersecting pathways that led to an infinite number of destinations.

The city without a plan had a network of elevated tunnels that were used as a secret transportation system for artists and creatives. This covert network allowed people to move freely and unobstructed throughout the city, enabling them to easily access the various creative spaces and studios that dotted the landscape.

The architecture of the city without a plan was equally diverse and varied, with structures and buildings of all shapes and sizes, each reflecting the unique and individual perspectives and experiences of those who inhabited them. Some buildings were tall and sleek, soaring into the sky like glittering spires of glass and steel, while others were short and squat, nestled into the earth like ancient stone monoliths.

One of the city's most iconic buildings was a massive, sprawling treehouse that was built and maintained by a group of artists and architects. This unique and innovative structure was home to a thriving community of creatives, who used it as a workspace and a place to collaborate and share ideas.

Despite this diversity, however, there was a sense of unity and harmony that pervaded the city without a plan. The structures and buildings of the city were not isolated and disconnected, but rather they were part of a larger, interconnected whole, each one contributing to the vibrant and dynamic tapestry of the city.

The city without a plan had a system of green spaces that were designed to encourage community building and connection with nature. These beautiful and inviting spaces were home to a variety of events and activities, from picnics and barbecues to live music performances and art exhibits.

It was this sense of unity and connection that made the city without a plan such a special and unique place. It was a place where the boundaries between individuals and communities were blurred and where the forces of change and creativity were always at work, shaping and reshaping the landscape in new and unpredictable ways. It was a place that inspired us to dream and to imagine.

In this sense, the city without a plan served as a metaphor for the constantly evolving and dynamic nature of the human mind and the infinite potential for creativity and innovation that lies within us all. It was a place where we could let go of our preconceived notions and expectations and embrace the infinite possibilities of the mind. It was a place where we could let our minds wander and explore the endless expanse of the human imagination, a place where anything was possible, and anything could happen.

And as for Constant, he spent the rest of his days happily wandering the winding streets and sprawling landscape of the city without a plan, marvelling at the endless possibilities and potentialities of the mind. As he explored the city without a plan, Constant was struck by the incredible diversity of the people and cultures that inhabited this place. It was a place where people from all walks of life came together to share their ideas and experiences, to collaborate and create, and to push the boundaries of what was possible. It was a place where the traditional divisions and barriers that separated people were broken down, and where everyone was free to explore and express themselves in their own unique and individual ways.

One of the city's most popular festivals was the annual "Celebration of Diversity," which was a massive celebration of the city's vibrant and varied cultures and traditions. This event was a celebration of the city's inclusive and welcoming spirit, and a testament to its commitment to fostering a sense of community and connection among its inhabitants.

Despite the seemingly utopian nature of the city without a plan, Constant was also aware of its dark and shadowy side. Like any city, it had its share of crime and corruption, and there were those who sought to exploit and manipulate the creative and innovative spirit of the city for their own gain. There was a group of shadowy figures who were known as the "Idea Thieves," who were infamous for stealing the creative ideas and intellectual property of other artists and creatives. These thieves operated in secret, using their cunning and guile to steal the ideas of others and passing them off as their own.

However, Constant was not one to be discouraged by these challenges. He was convinced that the city without a plan was a place where anything was possible and anything could happen, and he was determined to do everything in his power to nurture and protect this special and unique place.

Constant was a key figure in the city's underground art scene, and he worked tirelessly to support and promote the work of emerging and established artists. He was known for his tireless work ethic and his passion for the creative process, and he inspired countless others to follow in his footsteps and pursue their own creative dreams.

As the years passed, Constant's city without a plan became a beacon of hope and inspiration for artists and creatives all over the world. It was a place where the forces of change and creativity were always at work, shaping and reshaping the landscape in new and unpredictable ways.

Despite this diversity, however, there was a sense of unity and harmony that pervaded the city without a plan. The structures and buildings of the city were not isolated and disconnected, but rather they were part of a larger, interconnected whole, each one contributing to the vibrant and dynamic tapestry of the city.

It was a place that inspired us to dream and to imagine, to push the boundaries of what was possible and to explore the vast and varied landscape of the artificial mind.

The city without a plan once had a massive, interactive public art installation called "The Great Gear Wheel," which was a giant, spinning metal structure that was powered by the collective energy and creativity of the city's inhabitants.  This innovative and immersive art installation was a testament to the city's commitment to fostering creativity and innovation and a celebration of the boundless potential of the human mind.

As for Constant himself, he spent the rest of his days happily wandering the winding streets and sprawling landscape of the city without a plan, marvelling at the endless possibilities and potentialities.

Labyrinth of Ladders

Ladders, 2022 Ⓜ

I have always been fascinated by the complex and multifaceted nature of the human mind.  And so, when I first encountered Constant Nieuwenhuys' concept of the "Labyrinth of Ladders," I was immediately intrigued.

According to Nieuwenhuys, the ladders represent the various paths and possibilities that are available to us as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the mind. These ladders are not physical objects, but rather metaphorical representations of the choices and decisions that we make throughout our lives.

Some of these ladders are straightforward and easy to climb, leading us to clear and predictable destinations. Others are more challenging and difficult to navigate, requiring us to make tough choices and take risks in order to reach our goals. But no matter which ladder we choose to climb, Constant argues that they are all interconnected and interdependent, forming a complex and intricate network that reflects the complexity of the human mind.

Constant was actually a ladder himself, but this did not stop him from exploring the city without a plan and immersing himself in its vibrant and dynamic culture. Despite his unusual form, Constant was a beloved and respected member of the city's community, and his unique perspective and creativity were greatly valued by all who knew him.

Constant's work and ideas continue to inspire and influence artists and thinkers to this day, and his concept of the city without a plan has become a powerful symbol of the human potential for creativity and innovation. It is a place where the boundaries between individuals and communities are blurred, and where the forces of change and creativity are always at work, shaping and reshaping the landscape in new and unpredictable ways.

It is a place where anything is possible and anything can happen, where the only limit is the human imagination. And it is through the creative process that we can truly understand and explore the vast and varied landscape of the mind, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and discovering new and previously unimaginable ways of being and experiencing the world.

As the years passed, the city without a plan continued to soar above the earth, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors and residents from all corners of the world. The city's diverse and vibrant arts scene drew artists and creatives from all walks of life, who came to explore and express themselves.

One of the city's most popular attractions was the "Innovation Quarter," a sprawling district that was home to a wide range of cutting-edge technology and research facilities. Here, scientists and engineers worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of what was possible, developing new technologies and inventions that would shape the future of the world.

Another popular destination in the city was the " Quartier Latin ," a bustling neighbourhood that was home to a wide range of galleries, theatres, and performance spaces. This vibrant and creative community was a hub for the city's thriving arts scene, and it was here that many of the city's most innovative and ground-breaking performances and exhibitions took place.

Despite its reputation as a place of boundless possibility and creativity, the city without a plan was not without its challenges. As the city grew, it faced a number of complex social and environmental issues, including overcrowding, pollution, and income inequality. But the city's residents were nothing if not resilient, and they worked together to find creative and innovative solutions to these challenges.

One such solution was the "Green Belt," a massive network of green spaces that encircled the city and provided a much-needed oasis of calm and tranquillity in the midst of the city's hustle and bustle. The Green Belt also served as a vital ecosystem, supporting a wide range of plant and animal life, and helping to mitigate the city's impact on the environment.

The Looping Problem in the City Without a Plan

Cycling Repetitions, 2022 Ⓜ

As the sun set on the city without a plan, its inhabitants gathered in the central square, drawn together by a sense of unease and concern. For weeks, they had been experiencing a strange and troubling phenomenon: their thought patterns seemed to be stuck in a loop, repeating the same ideas and actions over and over again. Despite their best efforts, they had been unable to break free from this cycle of repetitive thinking, and the once-vibrant culture and creativity of the city had begun to wither and fade.

As the residents of the city gathered in the square, they began to share their stories and experiences of the looping problem. Some spoke of feeling trapped in a never-ending cycle of the same thoughts and actions, unable to find new and innovative ways of being and experiencing the world. Others described a sense of disconnection and isolation, as if they had lost touch with their own creativity and the vibrant culture of the city.

As the stories were shared, it became clear that the looping problem was a widespread and deeply troubling phenomenon, one that threatened the very foundations of the city without a plan. The once-vibrant culture and creativity of the city seemed to be at risk of being lost forever, and the residents knew that they had to act.

After much discussion and debate, the residents of the city without a plan came to a decision. They would work together to find a solution to the looping problem, using all of their collective knowledge and expertise to come up with a plan of action. They would challenge their own biases and preconceptions, in the hopes of breaking free from the cycle of repetitive thinking and reclaiming their creative energy and potential.

Over the next weeks and months, the residents of the city without a plan dedicated themselves to finding a solution to the looping problem. They set up a series of task forces, each focused on a different aspect of the issue, and they worked tirelessly to come up with creative and innovative solutions.

Through a combination of individual effort and collective action, the residents of the city were able to make significant progress in addressing the looping problem. They implemented a series of programs and initiatives designed to promote critical thinking and encourage the embrace of new and diverse ideas.

As the efforts of the city's residents began to bear fruit, the looping problem began to ease. The residents of the city were able to break free from the cycle of repetitive thinking and rediscover their creative potential, and the culture and creativity of the city began to flourish once again.

Though the looping problem was never completely eliminated, the residents of the city without a plan learned that with hard work, determination, and a willingness to embrace new and innovative technologies, they could overcome even the most daunting of challenges. And as the city continued to thrive and evolve, the residents knew that anything was possible.

“As a professor of Imaginational Theory, I often find myself drawn to the symbolism and metaphors that are used to convey complex ideas. One such metaphor that I find particularly interesting is the concept of the "hamster wheel." A hamster wheel consists of a circular track that is enclosed by a cage, and the animal can run inside the track to get exercise.

Looping Problem in Machine-Learning, Abstract : Reality (Chess), 2016 Ⓜ

In the context of "The City without a Plan," the hamster wheel is used as a metaphor for the concept of a loop. A loop is a repeating pattern or sequence of events that occurs over and over again. It is a common occurrence in both mathematics and philosophy, and it can be used to describe a wide variety of phenomena.

In the context of "The City without a Plan," the hamster wheel serves as a metaphor for the way that 1s mind become trapped in repetitive patterns of thought and behaviour. Just like a hamster running on a wheel, we can become trapped in a cycle of repeating the same actions and thoughts over and over again, without ever breaking free to explore new and different possibilities.”
